In 1909 work was well advanced on an extension of one acre to the south of the island. So that means that the date of 1920 for this image is at least 10 years to late.

Hi Pete, the 1909 extension was dismantled in 1912. The current platform was constructed in 1929, so the 1920 date is actually OK for this image as the there was no extension between 1912 and 1929. Aerial photography wasn't really around anyway in 1910; indeed aeroplanes were quite a novelty. The dates for the images in this archive are pretty bang-on.

The paddle steamer is probably heading for the North Pier

The Pier is Grade II* Listed and was opened in 1867. It was damaged in 1984, and again by storms in 1990. It has been closed since 1994. The decking is in a dangerous state. Developments for an hotel etc have been proposed but have yet to come to fruition
