In this picture, North Gawber Colliery,Carr Green, Monkey Park, Hill End Lane where stood an old colliery turned into a pumping station. From this station ran the old wagon way to the Barnsley canal and the 32 steps bridge, in days of yesteryear coal from that colliery would be transported down the wagon way to the canal.

In the late 1940's the area around that colliery was opencast mined, we assume to mine left behind coal seams. The over burden from the opencast mining can be seen above the white cropping mark.

In this picture, Opencast coal mining, Monkey Park Cricketers Arms Wentworth rd, Hill End Lane, Carr Green, Swallow Hill, North Gawber Colliery.

Top of picture opencast coal mine on and around the old wagon way to the Barnsley canal 32 steps bridge and Wilthorpe.

It is assumed that they opencast mined coal seams left behind from the pit shaft where the Wentworth rd and Hill End Road meet, at this time we have no name of that pit shaft or colliery name.

Two large mounds of overburden can be seen in the picture, i recall that in those days we spent hours looking at the opencast plant machines working. It is also worth mentioning that when the opencast began to back fill quite a lot of broken plant machines and trucks were buried at the same time, even the old concrete road they built was buried too.
