| According to an 1869 directory and the 1872 Lighting Rates, the first house in Church Street was a small Beerhouse called The Magpie. This and a few other smaller Beerhouses in the area closed in the 1870's mainly due to the Temperance movement pressuring for tightening the regulation of beer licenses. |

I'm not convinced that this building is the old cinema.My recollection is that the cinema (Granada formerly Plaza) was further up and was situated on the Carshalton Road. On the other side of the road from the cinema was Sutton Police station. |
