School. I was here 1959-1964 when it was the 'Upper School' of the 'SE London Secondary Technical School' which in fact was a comprehensive rather than secondary-modern school. The GLC dropped the 'Technical' designation around 1962; I'm not clear why! (The Lower School was close to St John's railway station.)

Flying junction with what is now the East London Line. The embankment is still in situ and is just overgrown. The British rail network was nationalised in 1948 and the East London Line would become part of the London Underground, losing what remained of its through services.

It was still used into BR days for limited freight transfers from the Eastern Region to/from the Southern Region. I was train-spotting in the school diner hour at New Cross Gate station in 1960 when, along the UndergrounD lines came the gleaming 0-6-0T pilot loco from Liverpool Street station with half-a-dozen vans!

New Cross station. New Cross Gate (originally "New Cross (LB&SCR)") is just off the side of the image, to the right.
