'THE PRINCE OF WALES THEATRE'..BROAD ST...OPENED IN 1856 AS 'THE ROYAL MUSIC HALL'.....RENAMED 'THE PRINCE OF WALES OPERETTA HOUSE' BY THE NEW OWNERS IN 1862 TO CELEBRATE THE WEDDING OF THE PRINCE OF WALES AND PRINCESS ALEXANDRIA,(LATER BECAME EDWARD VII AND QUEEN ALEXANDRIA)...'OPERETTA HOUSE' PART OF NAME DROPPED IN 1865...SOLD IN 1866 AND REFURBISHED AND AGAIN BEFORE BEING SOLD IN 1898...DECLINED PROGRESSIVELY...ON 9TH APRIL 1941 RECEIVED A DIRECT HIT, DESTROYING COMPLETELY THE INTERIOR..NEVER REOPENED...DEMOLISHED IN 1987... ST CHAD'S BISHOP'S HOUSE....ALSO BUILT BY AUGUSTUS PUGIN (1812-1852)FOR THE FIRST ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP OF BIRMINGHAM...THOMAS WALSH....IN 1840 AND DEMOLISHED IN 1959 FOR THE CREATION OF THE RING ROAD. IT COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED IF THE CATHEDRAL WOULD PAY FOR THE EXTRA COST TO DIVERT THE RING ROAD AS HERBERT MANZONI WANTED, BUT THE COST WAS TOO HIGH, SO A FINE PUGIN CREATION WAS LOST.(WOULD IT HAVE BEEN ALLOWED IN LONDON?????)THE CHIMNEY PIECE AND TWO CHAIRS ARE PRESERVED IN THE 'VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM' IN LONDON.

LOCATION OF 'THE NEWTOWN PALACE THEATRE' , OPENED IN 1914 AS A CINE & VARIETY THEATRE, DIDN'T LAST LONG AS A VARIETY VENUE (ESPECIALLY WITH THE 'ASTON HIPPODROME' ABOUT A MILE AWAY) CONTINUED AS A CINEMA UNTIL CONVERSION IN 1961 TO A BINGO HALL. THIS LASTED UNTIL CLOSED BY LADBROKES IN 1983. REMAINED CLOSED AND DECAYING UNTIL DEMOLISHED FOR THE WIDENING OF NEW JOHN ST WEST IN THE 1990'S.

THE ASTON HIPPODROME.....LAUREL & HARDY, AMONGST OTHERS, PERFORMED HERE AND DRANK IN THE BARTON ARMS ACROSS THE ROAD. THE THEATRE LASTED UNTIL ITS DEMOLITION IN THE EARLY 1980'S.....NOW THE LOCATION OF 'THE DRUM'.
