Luton Bute Street Station was on the old LNER line, later BR Eastern Region. Trains ran to Dunstable Town and also to Newmill End, Harpenden East, Wheathampstead, Ayot (until the station was destroyed by fire in 1948), Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield. The line closed(Dr Beeching's axe)in 1965. In the last years it was served by diesel multiple units. I remember walking in woods near Ayot St Peter in the early 60s and hearing a steam train whistle on the line. '
