' This was originally the site of an early colliery. The field was known as the 'pit field'. The standard railway gauge of 4' 8.5" was first used on the wooden waggonway from this colliery to the Tyne, this was considerably before George Stephenson adopted this gauge at Killingworth colliery. The birth of a worldwide standard happened here, based on the size of the horses stabled at this coal mine! (with thanks to Les Turnbull) '
