' Barker Street. My Father, born in 1919, was brought up in a house in this street. He used to tell of being sent for a bucket of gas tar from Longton Gas Works to paint on the lower half of the walls in house, so that the beetles couldn't be seen, with lime wash being used on the upper part. Another tale was about him shouting to the men working in the abattoir opposite his home to ask them to throw a pig's bladder over the wall so that he could use it to play football in the street with other kids. Hard but happy times! '
