' Royal Edward Dock. Excavation work visible in this photograph is part of the land reclamation scheme at Holesmouth set up in part to give relief work for the unemployed. The spoils of their labour being removed by contractor's railway trucks. In a matter of months this undertaking was to form part of the new Eastern Arm of the Royal Edward Dock expansion programme. The £1000, 000 contract to increase grain handling capacity at Royal Edward Dock was agreed at the beginning of 1924, and preliminary work undertaken in March of that year by Sir William Arrol & Co, Ltd. '
