' The pit hills formed from the spoils of Astley Deep Pit. The hills were the favourite haunt of school children where they could sit watching the locomotives working in and out of Dewsnap Exchange Sidings. The hill were also good for sliding down in summer using using the large curved corrogated tins off the old Anderson Shelters which made excellent sledges. These would hold about ten children who would drag it to the top then all jump on as it set off down the hill only to tumble off as it gathered speed then finally came to a sudden halt in a hollow at the bottom. I don't ever remember anyone getting hurt but then again I think we were brought up much tougher in those days. '
