This was the New Street premises of Scottish Motor Traction which later became known as Scottish Omnibuses and latterly Eastern Scottish. It was the company's head office and Edinburgh Depot. I worked in the head office during the very hot summer of 1975. As I recall there was a separate exit and entrance onto New Street, use being made of the hillside location. There was a steep climb up to the Royal Mile.

Edinburgh's electric street trams mostly ran between 1922 and November 1956. A new light rail transit system or tramway is expected to open in 2014, after years of gestation, linking Edinburgh airport with Princes Street and Leith. It will be a single route, longer but much less elaborate than the city's mid-twentieth century system
