lat. 52.5212 long. -3.6538 It is not Stormy Down but a small quarry nearby, the other side of the M4

I'm with 'tramwayman on this, I also think it is the Stormy Down quarry which of course is much larger today. I have had a look on Google Earth and along the edge of the quarry runs Heol-Y-Splott (that's the name of the road), there is an overhead cable tower there, similar to the one in this photo. I'm not saying it's the same one but the National Grid are sticklers for keeping these towers/pylons in the same place, so they don't have to update their maps!

I am no expert in mining and mining processes but I think that we are looking at machinery for sorting gravel or aggregate.

I think this is the quarry at the top of Stormy Down between Pyle and Bridgend which was served by a railway siding

I've had a look in the Stormy Down area and I can't find any quarry that looks like the one in our photograph. The National Library of Scotland have 6inch Ordnance Survey maps but I can't get the location given to fit any of the maps. In my view we are back to the drawing board unless we can have some more evidence to base the location.
