London Borough of Hackney Shoreditch Electricity Generating Station and Refuse Destructor Inaugurated 28 June 1897 by the Shoreditch Vestry, precursor of Shoreditch Borough Council, an early purpose-built undertaking to generate electricity from steam created by burning rubbish. It is now the "National Centre For Circus Arts" The National Centre for Circus Arts is a registered charity and one of Europe’s leading providers of circus education. Based in a magnificent Victorian power station adjacent to Hoxton Square, we involve thousands of people in the creation and performance of circus arts every year. Over half of the annual income needed to run the National Centre comes from grants and donations. Our diverse range of work includes a BA Hons degree in Circus Arts, a structured progressive training programme for under 18s and professional development opportunities for aspiring and established performers. Adults and young people can take part in a range of recreational classes and we provide workshops and away days for the business community.

The Bass Clef Jazz Club- Opened in 1984 by Peter Ind. The Bass Clef was a jazz club in an area which was, in the mid 80s at least, profoundly unfashionable, namely Hoxton. At night, it was dead - except for the Bass Clef which I remember standing out from the surrounding area because it was the only building that wasn’t completely dark. The BC was a little more civilised than your standard rock venue, in that at least it had a restaurant that served food you could actually eat. More to the point, it also had something about it that made you feel you were getting more than the mass produced, rock ritual experience offered by most venues at the time. The BC I remember coincided with the (very) brief jazz resurgence of the mid-to-late 80s, but I think it might have become more dance-orientated as the area trendified around it. It became the Blue Note in 1993, where, I must admit, I have never been.

Hoxton Square as it is today and what used to be my old school in the forties, St Monica`s still stands, but used for other purposes now. The church as you can see, is still going strong.
