Original Watford Workhouse (I think). Three storied building erected in 1721/22, still in use, albeit for other purposes into the beginning of the 20th century.

One of the early network of pylons and power lines which would become a familiar landmark during the interwar period across the whole nation, following the Electricity Supply Act of 1926. This network of lines for the transmission of energy at high tension was commonly known as the Grid.

A classic view, looking almost due north along the line of Watford High Street, of this traditional market town in its pre-World War II heyday (population 56,799 in 1931 census).

Watford had overtaken St.Albans as the premier town in Hertfordshire in the 1880s and would retain this pre-eminence until a century later, when the rapidly growing New Towns of Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage edged slightly ahead. In 2001, the census returns showed Hemel top with 82,074, followed by Stevenage (80,973) and Watford in third place with 79,726 people. This will have changed again a decade later, with Watford's population estimate of 90,301 just higher than the figures for its principal rivals.

All past and present inhabitants of SW Herts should be able to identify with this image of Watford in its prewar heyday.

Any group featuring Watford and SW Herts should readily appreciate this image looking up the main axis of the old, prewar town, namely Watford High Street.
