This block of The Grange housed Forms 1 (and 2?) of Alleyne's Grammar School. It was also shared with pupils of Girls Grammar School Stevenage at its inception in 1958.

1 Hitchin Road. This house was demolished in early 1973 to make way for the Road 10 development and associated junctions, Hitchin Road being made into a duel carriageway later the same year.

This line of trees is the Avenue, a footpath to St Nicholas Church. The trees were all lost in the Great Storm of 1987 but replaced and are now reasonably mature.

I remember that this was the route we walked to St Nicholas Church for the Alleynes School Founders Day Service. The school was founded in 1558 by the Rev Thomas Alleyne.

This large building is almost certainly a cinema, now demolished.

It was, indeed, a cinema, The Publix. A tiny theatre with a leaky roof which meant an umbrella was a handy thing to have with you if you sat in one of the 12 seats in the balcony on a wet night.

The triangular shaped green in the centre of the pic is known as the Bowling Green. The road that curves away from the green into the bottom right of the pic is the Baldock Road. Where the road rounds into the long straight section was Alleynes Grammar School (founded 1558). I was a pupil there in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The headmaster's house fronted onto Baldock Road, next to the school gates.

I can also make out the school office building which included the headmaster's study. Opposite the school office building I can see what was (in my time) the staff room and next door the colonnaded fives court (a sort of handball game)with what was (in my time) the art room above.

The long single-storey building to the left of the headmaster's house was a half-timbered barn which in my time at Alleynes were classrooms known (if my memory is correct) as the Maltings. For many years it had been the workshops and place where the legendary Vincent motorcycles were built.

Also on the pic is the teaching block we knew as The Grange but which in a previous existence had been the White Swan, a former coaching inn. This was visited by Samuel Peyps of the diary fame.

To the left and right of the Bowling Green runs Stevenage High Street. This was the line of the old A1 or the Great North Road.
