BIRMINGHAM TOWN HALL...….FOUNDATION STONE GIVES THE DATE OF MDCCCXXXIV (1834) AND GIVES THE NAME OF JOSEPH HANSOM. HE WAS ALSO THE DESIGNER OF THE 'HANSOM CAB'. HE AND HIS CO-DESIGNER APPARENTLY UNDERQUOTED AND BECAME BANKRUPT. THE BUILDING WAS EXTENDED LENGTHWAYS AT THE REAR, INCREASING THE NUMBER OF COLUMNS, GIVING MORE ROOM TO ACCOMODATE THE LARGE MUSICAL ORGAN.

CURZON STREET STATION IS THE OLDEST SURVIVING RAILWAY STATION IN THE WORLD. IT FORMED ONE END OF THE '' L & B R Co'' (LONDON & BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY COMPANY) THE OTHER END EVENTUALLY TERMINATED AT EUSTON, IN 1834. IT HAS NOW BECOME IMPORTANT AGAIN BECAUSE OF IT BEING THE TERMINUS FOR THE FIRST(AND POSSIBLY THE ONLY) PORTION OF THE LINE KNOWN AS HS2.

'CHRISTCHURCH BUILDINGS'....KNOWN AS 'GALLOWAYS CORNER' BECAUSE THERE WAS A CHEMIST, CALLED 'GALLOWAYS' ON THE GROUND FLOOR CORNER OF NEW ST AND VICTORIA SQUARE. THESE OFFICE BUILDINGS ALSO INCLUDED A 'J.LYONS COFFEE SHOP/RESTAURANT'. THEY REPLACED THE 'CHRISTCHURCH', WHICH WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1899......THESE IN TURN WERE DEMOLISHED TO MAKE A GRASSED AREA IN FRONT OF THE COUNCIL HOUSE...AND SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME THE LOCATION OF A FOUNTAIN AND CASCADE, REFERRED JOCKINGLY AS 'THE FLOOSY IN THE JACUZZI'....THE WATER FEATURE HAS BEEN TURNED OFF BECAUSE OF WATER LEAKS.

GREAT WESTERN ARCADE....BUILT OVER THE CUTTING LINKING THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY'S SNOW HILL AND MOOR STREET STATIONS IN 1874......THERE USED TO BE AN ENTRANCE INTO THE ADJACENT 'GREYS DEPARTMENT STORE' FROM DIRECTLY BELOW THE CUPOLA....THIS CLOSED AFTER 'GREYS' BECAME A 'HAMLEYS TOY STORE'.

CURZON STREET STATION....BIRMINGHAM'S FIRST RAILWAY STATION...THE ENTRANCE IS SUPPOSED TO MIRROR THE PORTICO OF THE THEN ENTRANCE TO EUSTON STATION IN LONDON...THE BUILDING TO THE LEFT OF CURZON ST STATION WAS A HOTEL FOR RAIL PASSENGERS....SADLY DEMOLISHED NOT LONG AGO....ALONG CURZON STREET CAN STILL BE SEEN THE LARGE SANDSTONE BLOCKS WHICH FORMED THE BOTTOM OF THE PERIMETER WALLS OF THE STATION. THE SITING OF THIS STATION PROVED INCONVENIENT FOR PASSENGERS BECAUSE OF ITS DISTANCE FROM THE CITY CENTRE, NECCESSITATING A CARRIAGE TRANSFER, THAT A NEW TERMINAL WAS PROMOTED.....THIS BECAME 'NEW STREET STATION'...WITH SEPARATE PLATFORMS FOR THE RAILWAY COMPANIES.
