The Canal Basin, the western end of the Thames and Medway Canal, opened on the 14th October 1824 at a cost of around £260,000 (original estimated cost in 1799 was approximately £24,500). The eastern end was at the Medway at Strood. The canal became impassable to barges in 1846 when the South Eastern Railway filled in the Higham and Strood tunnels to allow its double tracked railway to pass through.

Horse trough and drinking fountain. Although the road layout has changed over the years and there is now a landscaped roundabout in the centre of the 'Square', the water trough and fountain are still there.

In 1920 this was this was the site of Milton Barracks, and the rows of barrack blocks show clearly.

Milton Barracks, 2nd Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers marched out from here to France in 1914. Mentioned in the book, "The Old Toughs, From Milton to Mons" by Patrick Hogarty. Large sections of the boundary wall and some original buildings still in situ.
