St Mary Major church - built 1867 to replace the old Minster church which was in poor condition. During the C20th its use diminished, and it was demolished in 1971. See http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/_churches/stmarymajor.php for more information.

Bedford Circus, demolished and cleared of rubble. Many of the property owners were totally against the final demolition of Bedford Circus which though parts of it were destroyed or burnt out was considered saveable. But like most of Dix's Field was knocked down and bulldozed rather than saved for posterity.

St Stephen's Church survives amidst a wasteland. St Stephen's has a Saxon Crypt and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The church has a distinguished history and in July 2012 re-opened after a major £1.5m renovation.

As a kid I would catch the Whipton bus from here and I can remember the site still as a bombsite into the late fifties, overgrown with bushes and small trees and as I recall black cinder.

By 1951 the first of the smart modern offices was built here in High Street (Commercial Union Assce). Three years later Marks and Spencer was completed on the other corner 100 yards up the street.

Site of the new Bobby's building completed in 1960 which became Debenhams and is now John Lewis. It took thirteen years from the date of this photo to complete the rebuilding of the High Street as far as this corner, although much of the building work was completed by the late 1950's.
