Haycroft Road in 1946 was one of the main routes leading eastwards from the High Street and Letchmore Road in the "Old Town". Some late Victorian properties are evident at the lower end of the road, which used to be known as Haycroft Lane, and some council housing was built during the interwar years, from the junction of Hellards Road towards Longcroft Road. This writer can remember the distinctive pebble-dash finish to these cottage-style houses in the late 1940s. How different they look today!

Stevenage Town Football Club played their matches on this site from 1951, in the Delphian League, and this correspondent was taken to games by his father during seasons 1951/2 and 1952/3, before the family moved to the Watford area. I can recall the ground alongside the main line railway and the view across to Geo. King's 1937 factory.

Site of the current, opened mid 1973, railway station. This railway station is directly opposite both the (site of the) old "Kings" factory to the west of the railway and the centre of the New Town shopping area (clock tower and fountain etc) and main bus station.

Kings Factory (on the west side of the railway). This site has been developed into shopping & Leisure area, the surrounding area became the main industrial estate when the New Town was build, the new railway station opened in 1973 straddles the railway here.

If that was ever a Crossing keepers cottage it will have not been used as such for many years.
