' Hucknall Central railway station. Central as in part of the Grand Central railway, not very central in Hucknall. It was the third station in the town and the least convenient, leading to low usage. It was used by railway workers going to Annesley loco shed. This railway line ran from Manchester (to the left in this image) through Hadfield and Sheffield (Victoria) through ere and on to the right to Leicester, Rugby and London. The station was constructed circa 1896-1898 by the contractors Logan and Hemmingway and opened as Hucknall Town in 1899, renamed Hucknall Central in 1923. The station was closed to both passengers and goods on 4 March 1963. The London side (eg the station side) of the road is now housing but the former path of the (track removed 1969) line can be followed towards the North for some way. Leicestershire County Council record office have a photograph of the early days of the station construction in 1896 as part of the S W A Newton collection.
