This is where the 'Dilly' coal line crossed the main road at Bill Quay. The coal wagons dropped down the hill from Springwell using gravity. To stop them going too fast they were controlled by a wire rope . Once emptied at the Pelaw Main Staiths they were hauled back up to Springwell. Photos on my website www.gatesheadeast.co.uk '
