Romney Island - difficult to make out with the flooding. The river ran down the northwest side of the Island and the Lock Cut ran to the south. I used to go swimming in the lock cut in the 50s and it was also an excellent place for fishing. I remember fishing on the north bank of the Thames one year just by the east end of Romney Island when there was a huge splash; my Uncle had fallen in and his rod got caught in some tree roots. Fortunately a couple of swimmers helped out by diving down and recovering his rod. '
